Bespoke Wardrobe

Case Study 4 of Our Bespoke Case Studies Series

We were recently approached by a customer who had ambitions to build their own wardrobe, but did not have access to the space, sheet materials, or machinery to complete such a large piece of furniture themselves. We were happy to help and agreed to produce the wardrobe carcass so the customer could assemble and finish the item themselves, including adding their own decorative detailing.

We began by discussing the project with the customer to gain a clear understanding of what aspects of the build they wished to complete themselves and what they would like us to complete. The customer was keen for us to build the carcass of the wardrobe in flat-pack form, as the completed item would be too big to manoeuvre into its final location. They also asked us to assemble the drawer section for ease, along with providing hinges and fixing to assemble the carcass. The customer would then build the wardrobe in its final location and finish with their own handles, decorative detailing and paint.

As the customer would be painting all surfaces, we suggested a slightly lower grade of Baltic birch plywood to our usual furniture, as this would be more cost effective without detracting from the finish once painted. The customer kindly provided a sketch, with dimensions, which we were able to translate into a 3D model. This was provided, along with a detailed quotation confirming what would be included, for sign off and payment by the customer.

We began producing the wardrobe in three sections; the upper cupboards, the central wardrobe and the lower drawers. To assist the customer, we also produced a detailed assembly manual and labelled each item accordingly. From initial contact with the customer to delivery took a total of three weeks, and we kept in regular contact with the customer providing updates and photos as we progressed.

Once the wardrobe was delivered, we were delighted to see how our customer customised and finished the item. It’s just as they envisaged it.
