Baltic Birch Sideboard

Case Study 5 of Our Bespoke Case Studies Series

Here at Dust Shack we love the natural qualities of Baltic birch plywood, from the elegant lines of the exposed edges, to the water ripple effect of the grain. So, we were delighted when a customer approached us to design a Baltic birch sideboard for their dining room, to nestle in the alcove next to their chimneybreast.

We began by discussing the requirements, including the dimensions, layout of the drawers and doors, fixings, and finishes. From our discussions with the customer, we were able to provide a detailed quote and 3D sketches of the proposed sideboard.

Once the customer had signed off the design and made payment, we began work. Using digital woodworking technology, we accurately cut each piece of wood to size using our CNC machine. We then sanded each piece to a high standard for a silky smooth finish before assembling. Using domino mortise and tenor joints to hide the fixings, we securely built the sideboard frame leaving a sturdy and seamless finish. The drawer boxes were then built and all pieces were finished with two coats of Osmo Polyx-Oil Raw, which left the surfaces fully protected whilst highlighting the natural beauty of the grain.

The doors and drawers were then fitted to the sideboard to complete the piece. For a high quality finish, the doors were fitted with soft close hinges, and the drawers with full extension soft close runners. Once we were happy with each aspect of the sideboard, it was securely packaged and delivered on a pallet to our customer. The process from start to finish took two weeks.

Before we sent the sideboard off to its new home, we took a photo to show the sideboard dressed and ready for action. We love this design so much, it’s now part of our Baltic plywood range and is available for purchase in our shop.
