Bespoke Plywood Furniture

We are really excited to introduce our new range of mid-century modern inspired plywood furniture to you. We have been working hard over the last few months designing and handcrafting our range, which we know you will be proud to showcase in your home or office.

Although some of the furniture items are cut on our CNC machine, it is by no means an automated process. Each item takes many hours to handcraft, in order to create the perfect finish. We meticulously cut and glue layers of the highest grade birch plywood together to form the shape of the furniture. Once fully bonded, we spend many hours sanding the exposed plywood edge to ensure it is smooth and ready to be finished with a hard wearing lacquer. The lacquer is applied in layers and sanded further to ensure an even smoother finish.

Take a look at a snapshot of the process we follow when making our bespoke plywood furniture. Please do visit our store if you wish to purchase an existing item or contact us to commision a truely bespoke and unique item for your home or office.

Below shows a snippet of the multiple layers we cut in order to make a single item of furniture. We only use the highest grade furniture Baltic birch plywood, with a grade of B/BB and a thickness of 24mm. The edges exposed from these cuts are beautiful and this is what makes our furniture unique when finished with a really good quality lacquer and hard wax. The holes are used as part of the fixing process when we glue all the panels together, we use pine dowel rods for additional support and on the chairs we use steel rods for additional security.

Each layer is sanded and cleaned prior to glueing.

We then move onto glueing and fixing all the cut panels together, as many as 24 layers make up some of our plywood furniture.

Once the panels are glued, we apply clamps and leave for 24 hours in order for the panels to securely bond.

This where we really spend the hours on each item of furniture by sanding until we have a smooth finish throughout. Starting at 80 grit, we move in stages to 320 grit sandpaper. When we move onto the final stages of the finish, it is not uncommon for us to use a 600 fine grit sandpaper. It is important to spend as much time as neccessary on each item and to not rush this process.

The final result! Showcasing two birch plywood side tables that can be used as bedside tables or side tables in the living room.
